Blue October Expands Reach On New Album

December 30, 2008
December 30, 2008 11:28 AM ET
Gary Graff, Detroit

Blue October plans to “go global” with its fifth album, “Approaching Normal,” according to bassist Matt Noveskey.

“We want to go international,” Noveskey tells Billboard.com, adding that the plan will be in motion in January when the quintet group flies to Europe for a 10-day promotional swing after it films the video for new single “Dirt Room.”

“It’s real exciting because the last record (2006’s platinum ‘Foiled’) did real well here (in the U.S.) and just never really got that chance (in Europe). One thing we all said was, ‘Man, the next record, we’ve got to go global,’ so right off the bat as part of our campaign we’ll go over and start making a splash overseas.”

“Approaching Normal,” which was produced by Steve Lillywhite and recorded at Willie Nelson’s Pedernales Studios near Blue October’s home base of Austin, Texas, is due March 24 from Universal. Noveskey says that while frontman Justin Furstenfeld remains the chief songwriter, this album “was more of a group effort where we all got together and worked up a lot of these songs from scratch. It made us feel good as a team. There’s a lot of camaraderie on this record.”

Noveskey says the dynamic range of the album is more “dramatic-slash-theatrical” than its predecessors and spans “from the saddest, most depressing moments to the happiest, most joyful moments we’ve ever done.” “Approaching Normal” includes studio versions of older fan favorites such as “Kangaroo Cry” and “Graceful Dancing” and will also come out in explicit and “clean” versions, each containing a different bonus track.

Once the album’s out, Noveskey says Blue October plans to “tour like we always do … big time. We’re gonna be relentless. It’s gonna be a lot of work and it’ll be tough being away from our families, but we’re gonna work very hard.”

Some Coal For Local Radio XMas Shows

December 6, 2008

By Jesse Hughey

Published on December 03, 2008 at 10:12am

To celebrate the birth of the Savior, Dallas’ two commercial modern rock radio stations are throwing three big concerts in the next few days. KDGE-102.1 FM “The Edge” will have two “How The Edge Stole Christmas” shows. Night 1 includes Blue October, Hoobastank and Deep Ella on Thursday, December 4, at House of Blues in Dallas, while Night 2 veers closer to the station’s alternative roots with Death Cab for Cutie, Shiny Toy Guns and Cold War Kids. The harder-rocking KEGL-97.1 FM, which has no “alternative” pretenses, blows its holiday wad in a single night with Buckcherry, Hinder, Drowning Pool, Rev Theory, Hollywood Undead, In This Moment and Pimpadelic on December 6 at Nokia Theater in Grand Prairie.

These being Christmas shows, the typical groupie-provided gifts (blow jobs and blow) seem a tad inappropriate. Fans should wrap up these instead.

Blue October

This shape-shifting San Marcos alt-rock band began as a bro-friendly frat-rock outfit but decided to get “weird,” adding a few effects pedals and some eyeliner to the equation. You can thank them for the Twilight vampire book series and movie, as the band’s music has apparently inspired author Stephenie Meyer. Makes sense, as the band’s music sounds tailor-made for teenage girls. Their hit “Hate Me” was so bad that former Houston Press music editor John Nova Lomax wrote a 2006 column disavowing the band on behalf of his city, offering them to Dallas (where they first got major radio play—thanks, KDGE) and San Marcos. I’ll say “no thanks” on behalf of Dallas.

Gift idea: The title to the city of Albert, Texas (population 4), which is currently for sale. With Houston and Dallas officially distancing from the band, there’s no need for the band to besmirch San Marcos either.

Blue October not Foiled by the holidays

December 6, 2008

By ANDREW DANSBY HOUSTON CHRONICLE

Dec. 2, 2008, 2:09PM

Only the guy who wrote Hate Me could find comfort in Galleria shopping during the holidays. Recently back home to visit family, Blue October frontman Justin Furstenfeld admits “the one thing I miss the most is going to Brasil’s for coffee and Christmas shopping at the Galleria.”

In talking about the onslaught of promotion and touring that will coincide with the band’s March 2009 album, Furstenfeld also gets a little misty for the old days playing local clubs like Fitzgerald’s. “There were no responsibilities,” he says. “You’d just get up, rock and party. There were no interviews. Now I have to meet with the people from Red Bull.”

The club days were foiled by Foiled, a million-plus-selling breakthrough album that yielded two substantial hits in Hate Me and Into the Ocean. Furstenfeld says he never thought Hate Me would blow up like it did, but the band enjoyed a slow, swelling success. “Now here we are,” he says. “And we’re not going to stop until nobody wants to listen.”

But Foiled was released more than two years ago. Furstenfeld references a recent Chronicle tout for the band’s sold-out show at House of Blues Wednesday that suggested Foiled had been sufficiently mined. “We feel the same way,” he says. “You can only play the same songs for so long before it feels like beating a dead horse.”

So the wait will end early next year with a new album. Traipsing through the Web, there’s plenty of buzz that it’s to be titled “Approaching Normal,” but Furstenfeld wasn’t ready to share.

The band worked on the album with famed producer Steve Lillywhite (see accompanying story). He’d heard Blue October and contacted its management. Lillywhite (U2, XTC) seems a fine fit; his résumé suggests a penchant for acts with big melodies, some edgy inclinations that don’t quite sink into rudimentary rock, and he also seems to like violins, which Blue October has in the mix with multi-instrumentalist Ryan Delahoussaye.

Furstenfeld says the newest is the band’s best, which is something artists always say when a new one is on the way. But he seems genuinely pleased with the way the band worked with Lillywhite.

“He has a way about him to where he can get along with anybody,” Furstenfeld says. “His job is making who you are better. If you’re the biggest mouth-off in the world, he’ll accentuate that. I’m a control freak in the studio, and he let me sit next to him. He was open to input and not a cocky, egotistical (expletive).”

The album was just wrapped weeks ago, so there was nothing to preview. Furstenfeld says there was a simplicity to the recording process new to the band. Tonight’s show will give some a good opportunity to hear some of it.

“It’s just a short tour in some of our favorite markets,” Furstenfeld says. “To say to our fans, ‘Hey, it’s Christmastime, how’s it going? We’re sick of sitting on our butts.’ ”
